Charley Reese was right on target (as usual) in one of his recent articles. America is in her final days. We began the descent into our own Dark Ages in the mid to late 1970’s and are now teetering on the precipice of history.
Who is to blame? That’s easy….we are, the American people. Why? Laziness, pure and simple. Physically lazy, certainly. The U.S. has the highest obesity rates on the planet. But, to our everlasting shame and detriment we are intellectually lazy on a galactic scale. You don’t need to watch The Tonight Show’s “Jaywalking” segment to witness this embarrassing reality. Just pick a neighbor…and start talking.
How did this happen? Television, naturally, plays a major role. Neil Postman saw the decline of our intellectual society nearly 30 years ago in his revelatory book, “Amusing Ourselves to Death”. The ongoing advances in technology have created a civilization of couch potatoes and video game-addled children. It’s no wonder that this country is being assaulted on many levels by its own leadership. It’s this love affair with the ephemeral that allow the criminals we now have in office to easily manipulate the masses.
Add to this our predisposition to ogle at the sensational, worship at the altar of consumerism and indulge recklessly in activities that serve only ourselves and you have what can only be called narcissistic ignorance. We are a nation of cud-chewers, more concerned about who will be the next American Idol than who will be running the country next November.
President Bush, then, is us. The Great Oz who disguises his insecurities and crippling dysfunction behind his fire-snorting war machine, blaring the horns of fear whenever the cattle begin to stray from the herd.
The fact is, most Americans empathize with the president. In him they see themselves. His shortcomings, his bluster, his incredible ignorance about what makes a civilization work are the unholy religious precepts of which those that follow Bush bend their knee.
One of America’s greatest social critics, H.L. Menken, said it best, “As democracy is perfected, the office of president represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their hearts’ desire at last and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.”
Our 21st century Menken, Charley Reese, is correct. The empire that is America is sliding into the abyss.
WARNING: If you can't stomach Jay Leno's "Jaywalking" segments, then don't watch this, it's MUCH more horrifying
An amazing video that shows the overwhelming idiocy of the American people. Going as far as believing that the reporter, actually named Julian Morrow (a comedian who is a member of the Austrailian political comedy team The Chaser) is really the Prime Minister of Australia, John Howard
Here is the REAL John Howard (notice the striking similarities!)
